The Boston Red Sox is the Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The team began in 1901 and was one of the original members of the American League. The team had immediate success winning five World Series championships between 1903 and 1918. Then in 1920 the team's fortunes changed drastically when they sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. The year marked the beginning of the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry as well as the team's losing streak. Despite having many famous players the team failed to win a championship between 1918 and 2004. Then the tide finally turned again when the Sox won the 2004 World Series and went on to win again in 2007.
